After a summer-long transfer saga France midfielder Pogba finally returned to Old Trafford for a world-record fee of £89.3million last August, just four years after leaving the club under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Pogba won four consecutive Serie A titles at Juventus and developed into a key member of the side under Allegri after arriving on a free transfer from United in 2012.
And Allegri admitted he would have liked to have kept the 24-year-old, but as soon as United put up the big money for the player he decided it was too good to turn down.
Speaking about Juve’s transfer policy and referring to the sales of Carlos Tevez, Andrea Pirlo and Arturo Vidal in recent years, Allegri told Sky Italia: “Tevez and Pirlo made a choice, Vidal was a market opportunity that Juventus decided to exploit, along with me. The year after was different.
“All three years were different, the first year we just had to grow in Europe without disturbing anything.
“Then in the second year with 10 new players, the veterans didn’t recognise the dressing room, it took time to start again in a different way. “I didn’t ask for Higuain, but I did give directions and I said it was necessary to improve.
“Pogba or Paulo Dybala? Dybala’s game is easier on the eye, but Pogba is extraordinary because he has physicality and technique.
